When doctors operated on a patient suffering from vomiting and abdominal pain, 187 coins were recovered.

Doctors at Bagalkot's Hangalshree Kumareswar Hospital and Research Center say they have recovered 187 coins from the stomach of a patient who was admitted here after complaining of vomiting and abdominal pain.

"He was suffering from a psychotic disorder and was swallowing coins for the last 2-3 months. he Came To The Hospital Complaining of Vomiting And abdominal Pain, Said Dr Ishwar kalbargi  One of The Doctors Who Performed The Surgery.

His relatives took him to Hangal Srikumareshwar Hospital after he complained of stomach pain. Doctors x-rayed him and did an endoscopy, the doctor added, adding that the patient had swallowed a total of 187 coins. 56 coins of Rs.5, 51 coins of Rs.2 and 80 coins of Rs.1.

The doctor said that the Harijan swallowed coins of different denominations weighing 1.5 kg over a period of two to three months.

The man has been identified as Dayampa Harijan, a resident of Lingsogur town in Raichur district. The patient was suffering from schizophrenia, a psychiatric illness, one of the doctors treating him said on condition of anonymity.

"The stomach was very distended and many coins were stuck in different parts of the stomach. After a two-hour surgery, we removed all the coins. Post-operatively, he was treated for dehydration and other minor problems. The patient is in stable condition. And is still talking," said Dr. Kalburgi.

Because he was suffering from schizophrenia, patients in this condition are unaware of what they are doing. These are rare cases. "This is the first case of its kind for me in my 40 years of service," Dr Kalburgi added.
